Data Attribution – SAFE Geocoding Service

The SAFE Geocoding Service is based on Pelias and open geospatial data sources. Attribution and licensing requirements may depend on the underlying source data returned for a specific result.

Service version: The public API currently runs on the pinned Docker image pelias/api:v7.8.0. The generic Pelias interface label API Version: 1.0 is not used here, because it can be confused with the installed Pelias software release.

Core data sources

OpenStreetMap — © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
OpenAddresses — current OpenAddresses data interface.
GeoNames — geographical database under CC BY 4.0.
Who's On First — gazetteer data under various CC-BY or CC-0 equivalent licenses.

Software

Notes for researchers

When using geocoding results in research projects, please document the date of geocoding, endpoint used, input fields, filtering rules, and whether fallback-level results were excluded.
